Prof. Andrea Ballestero (University of Southern Califoria): Water, Future Histories, and their Casual Politics
How do people create differences by working through the possibilities existing within their worlds? How do techno-legal devices and time articulate forms of political action? In this conversation, we will build on the arguments that Prof. Andrea Ballestero lays out in A Future History of Water to consider a casual politics of the planetary. By tracing the history of a seemingly unrealized constitutional reform in Costa Rica, the limits of a narrow commitment to materiality become evident, and the possibility of a casual politics of the planet come into relief. Combining published work and reflections on her ongoing research, she proposes a conversation around water, the casual politics of techno-legal action, and our contemporary predicaments with extraction as a geosocial formation.
